How I Met Your Mother

Did you see the TV episode of How I Met Your Mother last night? It’s a funny show that’s always producing laughs. But one of last night’s chuckles wasn’t as spot on as usual.

The character Lily is pregnant on the show and last night her doctor told her it’s OK to drink a little wine while pregnant. The Ted character disagreed with the doc’s comment but later conceded. At the end of the show, Lily was shown holding a bowl of chips and a bottle of wine. I know it was meant to be funny, but that part wasn’t. Pregnant women should not drink alcohol – any alcohol.

Although many people are aware that heavy drinking during pregnancy can cause birth defects, many do not realize that moderate or even light drinking also may harm the baby. In fact, no level of alcohol use during pregnancy has been proven safe. Therefore, the March of Dimes recommends that pregnant women do not drink any alcohol, including beer, wine, wine coolers and liquor, throughout their pregnancy and while nursing. In addition, because women often do not know they are pregnant for a few months, women who may be pregnant or those who are attempting to become pregnant should not drink alcohol.

Another segment of the show involved eating sushi. Raw fish, including sushi and sashimi, and undercooked finfish and shellfish (including oysters, clams, mussels and scallops) are more likely to contain parasites or bacteria than cooked fish and, therefore, should be avoided by pregnant women.

My take away from this is to enjoy the laughs, but remember it’s just TV. Follow reliable medical advice and speak to your own health care provider.

Thank you for addressing this! I saw the show and couldn’t believe there was no disclaimer or anything!! Very reckless, CBS. NO amount of alcohol is OK! NO raw fish!! Heck-I didn’t even like the idea of cheetohs-but that’s just me!

Good think people noticed this kind of irresponsible activity. We must be very vigilant when it comes to our health. Choosing the right food is a must because that’s the only way to becoming healthy aside from doing exercises. Thank you for this post.

How do we let the folks writing such scripts that this is not OK.
Lilly is the one on the show with common sense and I bet folks will use this as an excuse to drink “a little”.

I’m sorry. I have to disagree a little.

This is a very idea of mob paranoia that I do not like.

So then how do you explain that French women (just to name ONE culture) have for centuries taken sips or two of wine during their pregnancy and their children are fine (if not better looking & healthier than the average bear).

I agree that everything must be in moderation (i.e -not downing a whole bottle of liquor). But that goes for things like not downing a whole cheesecake either -which most pregnant women here apparently choose to ignore.

As much as I love watching How I Met Your Mother, I was really disappointed with how lightly the show portrayed alcohol during pregnancy. I know it’s just a sitcom, but it has the potential to give uninformed pregnant women the wrong information.

It is NOT ok to have any amount of alcohol while pregnant.

Countless studies have proven alcohol consumption is harmful during pregnancy. Alcohol is a teratogenic substance, meaning that it causes damage to the growth and development of an unborn child, especially during the first few months of pregnancy. It freely crosses the placenta, so whatever mom drinks- the baby drinks. Why jeopardize your baby’s health for that occasional glass of wine? Are birth defects, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, or premature births really worth the risk?

Seriously? It’s a comedy show… A comedy show in which every person in the group has an identical twin, Barney (Enough said), and Robin is a Canadian pop star… Use your brains, people realize that this is comedy. The fact that you’re all getting so worked up is just a testament to how nosy, ill-informed, and pushy your demographic is getting. If a mother wants to drink while she’s pregnant it’s her womb, it’s her baby, and it’s her decision. Instead of writing angry letters about Lily wanting to drink wine while pregnant, how about you focus on your own lives, your own bodies, and your own children.

Problem with America? People like all of you. (Except Letta)
