		<description>There are things a mother can do to help prevent tears. Do a Google search for "perineal massage", which can be done before or during labor. During the second stage, oil may be applied to the perineum, a provider can support the  perineum, and holding bearing down to give the perineum a chance to stretch when the head is on it ("ring of fire") may also help.

Also, a new mother may get better perineal relief with a sitz bath than a regular bath, either warm or cold, because causes a localized effect (unlike a full bath that produces a generalized effect.)</description>
